The Technology

Not all light is equal

LLLT devices use different light sources — and the physics of how that light is generated directly affects how it interacts with your scalp.

LED

Emits incoherent light across a broad spectrum (±20–30 nm). Light scatters in all directions — like a flashlight. Good for broad coverage, but energy dissipates before reaching deeper tissue.

Laser Diode

Emits coherent light at a precise wavelength. Edge-emitting design produces an elliptical, asymmetric beam — harder to distribute evenly across the scalp and generates more heat per diode.

VCSELUsed in Lascure

Emits coherent light with a circular, symmetric beam. Surface-emitting design enables dense packing of diodes with low heat — delivering high radiant intensity per watt with uniform scalp coverage.

Why precision matters for photobiomodulation

Low-level laser therapy works by delivering light at specific wavelengths (typically 630–670 nm) to cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in your cells' mitochondria. This enzyme absorbs photons most efficiently within a narrow wavelength band.

Wavelength precision determines how many photons fall within that absorption peak. A light source with ±10 nm tolerance (VCSEL) concentrates more energy at the target wavelength than one with ±20–30 nm (LED), where a significant portion of photons falls outside the optimal range.

Coherent light maintains its energy over depth — photons travel in phase, reducing scattering as they pass through the epidermis and dermis. Hair follicles sit 3–5 mm below the surface. A focused, coherent beam is designed to deliver more energy at that depth than diffuse, incoherent light at the same power.

The Ultra 552 combines 352 VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) diodes with 200 red LEDs for maximum coverage. VCSELs produce a uniform, circular beam with higher efficiency than edge-emitting laser diodes — while the LEDs provide broad photobiomodulation. Most competitors use only laser diodes or only LEDs.
